Kidz World Curriculum
Curriculum planning at Kidz World is built on the foundation of Te Whāriki (the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum). From that foundation, we create a balanced learning environment where child-led exploration and teacher-guided opportunities work hand in hand. Our approach supports children to develop confidence, curiosity, and independence through meaningful play, aligned with the holistic goals and principles of Te Whāriki.
Te Whāriki: The New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum
Recognised internationally as a leading early years curriculum, Te Whāriki is the widely acknowledged curriculum for all New Zealand Early Childhood Education (ECE) centres. Developed by the New Zealand Ministry of Education and local ECE educators, the curriculum focuses on the holistic development of the child and provides educational guidelines up to the age of six years.
How we implement Te Whāriki
Our curriculum is fully encompassed by Te Whāriki and delivered through a Play-Based Learning style. We know children become deeply immersed when they are directly involved in meaningful, experiential, and ‘hands-on’ learning. Kidz World provides a carefully planned, all-day learning environment where our balanced approach blends child-led exploration with teacher-guided opportunities.
Children are encouraged to choose from developmentally appropriate activities thoughtfully planned by our teams of dedicated and passionate teachers. They engage in meaningful conversation, build on their prior knowledge to stretch their thinking, and acquire the skills needed for a successful transition to school.
Fostering Independence and Self-Determination
Kidz World teachers foster independence through gentle encouragement and respect for each child’s own pace. We provide daily opportunities for children to gain autonomy and confidence in their ability to manage self-care and emotional regulation, and to develop vital social skills. This entire journey is designed to empower them with self-determination for the years ahead.
The Five Strands of Te Whāriki in Action
At Kidz World, our curriculum planning directly reflects the five core strands that form the foundation of Te Whāriki. Our teachers intentionally weave these principles into every day, ensuring children experience:
Wellbeing | Mana Atua
Fostering independence and self-care, and providing a secure, predictable environment.
Belonging | Mana Whenua
Ensuring strong, respectful relationships between children, teachers, and whānau (family).
Contribution | Mana Tangata
Encouraging children to choose activities, participate in group decisions, and respect the rights of others.
Communication | Mana Reo
Engaging in meaningful conversations and providing rich exposure to symbols, literacy, and numeracy.
Exploration | Mana Aotūroa
By offering a hands-on, balanced environment that blends child-led play with teacher-guided opportunities to stretch thinking and acquire new skills.
Our Early Childhood Programmes
Infants
While individual sleep and feeding routines are always respected, every day in the Infants Programme is designed around essential components for security and development:
Nurturing Arrival & Settling:
Focused one-on-one time to ensure a warm, secure start to the day.
Sensory & Discovery Play:
Large, uninterrupted blocks of time dedicated to exploration of tactile materials, light, sound, and movement to build cognitive and gross motor skills.
Responsive Care:
Consistent, predictable routines for nappy changes, rest, and feeding that align with each child's individual needs and developmental rhythm.
Early Communication:
Daily interactions through songs, reading, and meaningful conversation to build strong language foundations.
Safe Outdoor Exploration:
Dedicated time in safe, sensory-rich outdoor spaces for physical development and connecting with nature.
2-5 years
Our 2-5 years Programme provides a dynamic framework that blends intentionality with self-determination, ensuring consistency across all centres while promoting deep engagement:
Uninterrupted Discovery Time
Extended blocks of time dedicated to child-led, play-based exploration across various learning centres (e.g., block construction, dramatic play, creative arts). This encourages critical thinking and deep involvement.
Intentional Group Time:
Planned teacher-led sessions for shared stories, singing, and discussions. This is crucial for communication skills (Mana Reo} and developing a sense of contribution.
Social & Independence Skills:
Focused practice during self-care routines, shared meals, and clean-up, fostering the independence and self-regulation vital for school readiness.
Outdoor Learning:
Daily intentional use of the outdoor environment for physical challenges, nature exploration, and collaborative large-group play.
Quiet Time/Focused Learning:
A balanced afternoon period dedicated to rest and small-group projects to introduce pre-literacy and pre-numeracy concepts.
Intentional Learning for School Readiness
Our primary goal is to empower confident, successful learners. We take a highly intentional approach to preparing children for their next educational step.
Goal-Focused Preparation: Clear learning expectations are thoughtfully set for each child and continuously monitored by our qualified teachers. This focused approach ensures children are actively reaching their expected learning goals and developing the crucial skills for primary school:
- Strong Social Interactions and Communication
- Growing Independence and Self-Care Skills
- Foundational Academic Literacy and Numeracy
Playing Our Way: The Next Developmental Adventure
Transitioning rooms is an exciting developmental milestone within our curriculum journey. We manage this process with sensitivity and care, focusing on intentional play, secure relationship-building, and emotional readiness to ensure a confident move from our Pepi rooms to our Tamariki Programs.
Playful Visits:
Children undertake short, playful visits to the new room to familiarize themselves with the routines and the engaging learning centres available for their exploration.
Relationship Focus:
We prioritise making sure children have developed a secure, warm relationship with their new teachers.
Parent Familiarisation Opportunities:
Parents are given opportunities to familiarise themselves with the new teaching team.
Emotional Readiness:
We ensure children are emotionally ready for this step, empowering them to confidently take on new learning opportunities.
